People come to the Finger Lakes region to frequent many of the local wineries, restaurants, bed and breakfast, and more. A great part of the attraction is the pastoral beauty of vineyards, woods and lakes. The Finger Lakes area was recently named the Most Beautiful Lake Region in the World by a prominent travel magazine. The proposed Seneca Lake LPG Facility will quickly and irrevocably change the Finger Lakes area into a much more industrial site.

Seneca Lake LPG FacilityIn addition to the initial storage of liquid petroleum gas, the company (Inergy) wants to make this area (with the 60+ depleted salt caverns) the “natural gas storage and transportation hub” for the entire northeastern United States. Needless to say, this will be extremely detrimental to tourism, wineries, hunting and fishing, and many other attractions of the Finger Lakes area.

The Proposal:

The initial proposal is to store 88.2 million gallons (2.1 million barrels) of liquid petroleum gas in 2 of the depleted salt caverns in the town of Reading, with a 14 acre brine pit on the steep western slopes of Seneca Lake, only 1 mile north of Watkins Glen.

Detrimental Effects Which Will Result From This Plan:

  • 14 acre brine pit to start, many more huge brine pits to follow
  • Possible breaches pf the brine pits into Seneca Lake during severe weather
  • Possible explosions from high pressure storage of liquid petroleum
  • 24/7 noise pollution from trucks, train and compressors
  • Light pollution and industrial scenery with frequent gas flares
  • Traffic congestion from 24/7 trucks and trains
  • Pollution from idling trucks
  • Eyesore from the brine pit and truck sites
  • Further growth of such industrial sites as they expand to the 60+ depleted salt caverns
  • Very few jobs and profits will stay in the area–most benefit will go to the company and elsewhere
  • Promotion of hydro-fracking and gas storage and shipping hub
